University of Virginia Gilmer Hall and Chemistry Building Renovations
A complete renovation of two adjacent buildings (505,000 GSF total), including full mechanical upgrades with new rooftop units and accompanying screenwalls, new two-story spaces in both buildings, two new elevators and a large-scale façade replacement. A small addition and reconfiguration of the connecting plaza was also part of the Chemistry work. The variety of structural systems in these two buildings include Cast in Place one and two-way slabs, Precast Prestressed Tees, Hollow-Core Plank, Two-way voided slabs, and Cast in Place concrete joists. To support a small addition over existing structure, it was more cost effective to thread columns down through two floors to foundations that it was to modify the existing structure.
