HFA was the proud sponsor of the Faculty Selected Best Structural Thesis Project Award for the Penn State AE Thesis again in 2026. Congratulations to structural engineering students Maria Heren, Brittany Loken and Dominic Gallo, part of Team 3, Artifex AE.
Penn State’s AE thesis has always centered on a yearlong study of a real building. The students first work to understand the actual design of the building and then present a re-design using an alternative engineering system while also responding to a unique set of faculty created design challenges. AE thesis has recently evolved from students working on individual projects to new team-based interdisciplinary collaborations. 49 Jurors, including HFA representative Amy Barabas, all seasoned professionals in Structural, Mechanical, Electrical/Lighting and Construction disciplines, were tasked with selecting the best thesis in each discipline as well as the overall. Following the presentations and deliberations, awards were presented at the annual AE Banquet.
