This August, Mark Bland attended the ASCE Younger Member Leadership Symposium. 49 engineers from all over the country gathered in Reston, Virginia to network, discuss growing issues in the industry and to develop skills necessary for effective leadership. Some of the sessions throughout the weekend included skills dealing with communication styles, negotiating, developing a personal vision and difficult conversations. Group discussions helped give the attendees a different perspective of the industry and a better understanding of how to balance life as an engineer.
Later in the conference, a mentorship panel featuring leaders of the engineering profession provided feedback and answered questions about the importance of mentorship, generational differences and ways to improve one’s career. The three day workshop was a beneficial trip for all that will leave a lasting impact on not only the attendees but also their colleagues and mentors across the nation.
