Today is the grand opening of the $16.6 million dollar renovation to Clarion University’s Becht Hall. Hope Furrer Associates is proud to have served as the structural engineer for this unique project.
Becht Hall is an early 20th century four story, 60,000 s.f. dormitory building, which was converted into a state of the art student success center. The historical architectural significance of the 1908 building required that the exterior façade and roof be maintained for the renovation. The completed building houses Clarion departments focused on student success, including Admissions, Residence Life, Wellness Center, Career Services, and other support Services.
The interior existing wood, timber, and bearing wall construction was entirely demolished and replaced with new structure capable of supporting the structural loads required for the change in use. At the same time, the historical exterior façade and roof was maintained. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSh92lpXyl8HFA for a time lapse video of the construction. The end result is one of the most unique student centers in the country.
Thank you to all that were involved in this project, especially Clarion University, architect PWWG, Owner’s representative Gilbane, and General Contractor UHL.
