Nicole Baer of Hope Furrer Associates finally attended Structures Congress 2022 in person in Atlanta, GA! This is especially good news for Nicole because she is a member of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI) Technical Paper Review Committee (NTPC) for the conference, which is held annually. Hers is just one of many committees that puts in many hours of time to make the conference rewarding, educational, and fun each year.
The planning takes dedication and time, which is why it was so disappointing that the April 2020 conference in St. Louis was one of the first things cancelled due to the pandemic. As a consolation prize, Structures Congress 2020 was moved to June, and the program was massively reduced to just a fraction of the size, hosted virtually. Similarly, NTPC planned a full conference to be held in Seattle, WA for 2021, but it, too, was reduced in size and scope when it went virtual. So, it was with great satisfaction and joy that SEI convened in person on April 20, 2022 in Atlanta, GA.
This year’s program received high praise, and Nicole was particularly inspired by presentations about embodied carbon, code changes, and a workshop that will help her to facilitate innovation and consensus with team members in the future. She is excited to share the things she learned with her colleagues, so that Hope Furrer Associates can deliver the best structural solutions to their clients, and, of course, stay on top of the ever-changing code provisions.
The planning starts each year in June, when Nicole, along with other members of the Buildings Group, reviews hundreds of proposed abstracts for inclusion in the technical program. The call for proposals to be included in Structures Congress 2023 in New Orleans is just around the corner!
