The environmental impacts of buildings are significant and as designers, we have an important role to play in sustainable development. The concepts and technology to advance sustainability goals continue to grow and we need to stay informed of these developments. Melissa Harmon attended the Green Building United’s 2022 Sustainability Symposium in Philadelphia, which was fortunately in person this year. This unique event includes not just architects, engineers, and construction teams, but also brings community development, energy services, non-profit groups and climate advocates together for discussions and education on how to advance sustainability in design projects. While carbon is the focus of many sustainability conversations, there were also discussions on protecting birds from glass strikes and providing birds habitat in our urban areas using green roofs and green walls. Another session discussed programs where community members clean up abandoned city lots to provide community gardens. Melissa has attended this event for multiple years and finds that, while the topic can be heavy, this is a very uplifting and inspiring day.
